Practice collaborative mapping with Google MyMaps

What you will need:

  • A computer with internet access
  • A Google account
  • One or more other people interested in helping make the map with internet-connected computers and Google accounts
  • A list of Google account email addresses for all those you invite to collaborate

To get started:

You should…

  • Open https://maps.google.com in your internet browser and sign-in with your Google account
  • Open My Maps by clicking on the menu icon in the top left-hand corner
  • Select CREATE MAP
  • Name your map
  • Share your map

Now those who want to collaborate in creating the map can…

  • Open the shared collaborative map by clicking the invitation link in the email sent

All collaborators in making the map can now…

  • Start mapping by adding or selecting a layer to edit
  • Choose a tool to Add marker (for points) or Draw a line (for lines and polygons)
  • Add image or video inside the feature box
  • Change the icon shape or color in the layer preferences
  • Change the icon shape or color based by the sequence of the features or based on the data in the name or description of the feature
  • Change the base map
  • Import data from a file in CSV, XLSX, KML or GPX format when adding a new layer
